My family is very outspoken.

Today I wanted to see how this carpet (which actually is not a carpet, but a thick, woven curtain on top of a cheap carpet) might look like for a design project I'm working on. There were not many positive remarks from my family...(ahhm, actually they were 100% negative ;).

What do you think?

The norwegian people choose the same three colors for their flag in 1821 as the french for their tricolore.

There are all kind of theories what the colors refer to.

Anyway it definately is a nice color combination :)

Getting ready for summer... even though we had full storm and icy winds the last days :).

I painted this sign on an old lid from a trailer (?), which I took home with me last year from the roadside not far from our house. (I had it seen laying there for many months, so I figured out nobody wanted it anymore).

It's going to be used in my upcoming project :)

my favorite spot on the island

it's called "fredtun" - yard of peace

a secluted little "valley" at the rocky eastern shore

(we live at the western side of the island, with a steady wind from north or west)

here it's calm

years ago the place was used for childrens camps

yesterday it was just us and extended family

and the sun

the boys played soccer all afternoon

while she wished there would be water in the swimmingpool

We had a some rather quiet and slow holidays apart of last Saturday, where my father-in-law and my husband worked hard all day laying the new floor.

There's still quite some things to do, doors must be re-installed and molding has to be attached.

The floor is ash with some white-washed finnish. I love it. And I have waited patiently for several years for this type of flooring coming for sale. Now it was for sale for a reasonable price. :)

My little girl and I dyed easter eggs this morning... so fun.

We used stuff from the kitchen (bluberry, coffee, beetroot, tumeric,...)

I bought this bunny with her three little ones many years ago, when I was a mother of three little boys - I had them in under three years. Every year when I get them out I have to smile, because I remember so well feeling like a bunny jumping around trying to keep the little ones together. ;)

This room is so hard to take good pictures, because of the large window...

Blue and white pillows (two made from dish towels) and some white tulips...

Blue and white dishes (not old or expensive ones, but fond memories attached - my husband had them in his university years and we used them the first years of our marriage)

Our house gets messy quicker than I'm able to clean up. (Yes, the kids do chores, but still...)

I laughed when I saw that my friend Rie filed the photo from my living room at Pinterest with the comment:

"... so soothing".

I grabbed my camara and took a picture as it was

right there and than... so soothing!!!

Sometimes I try to keep up with everything. I try to be this really neat person. I think my family likes me not so much on these days... and I realized another thing: my creativity dries up.

Some days being creative is more important to me than a clean house.

So, if you come over and the house is a mess, just know I had other priorities that day...

I feel it's a long time I shared some pics of my livingroom, but it has been looking the same for many months now... (even the decor has been the same)... until some days ago. I suddently became restless :).

For me there's no cheaper or quicker way to give a room a new and fresh feeling but to move the furniture around a bit...

I love the intimicy of having the two sofas close together without a coffe table.

It works well for our family, but not so much for hosting bible study groups, etc... so I doubt I'll keep it very long. But with the woodstove just on the other side it's very cozy as long as we lit a fire in the evenings (or all day, when it's really cold).

This table is rarly used for eating, but very often for homework, playing games, drawing... I like to have an extra table in the livingroom.

The piano wall is still nearly the same.

As I type this I have my girl snuggling up to me, one of the boys is sitting across on the other sofa, reading... and three boys are outside. One just informed me there was a diaper to change...

After our weekend in the snow I'm in the process of finding ski shoes for every member of our family. I found one pair at our local goodwill. And there I saw some old wooden ski...

But I coudn't justfy to spent 100 NOK on something I did not really need.

So I went home without buying them.

When I told one of my sons about it he informed me that we actually had two pair of old wooden ski on the garage loft. (they belong to my parents-in-law).

So for now it's still a little winter around here.

I know. Life is busy. Life is good and sometimes hard. This blog is just a tiny aspect of my life...

On Friday we had a birthday celebration for our little girl.

Some primulas and using what I had around the house...

Writing the guests names directly on the paper plates...

Adding a bow to the chair of the birthday child....

and reusing the garland I made for babyboys birthday last year, added a little party mood to the dining room.

Later that day we had a family party for both her and boy nr2 who turns eleven in February.

This boy makes me laughing!

I started to paint our bedroom grey yesterday - love it so far... :)

But today it's Sunday and we had sun...

In the woods we went, meeting up with some other families from church...

My two oldest boys and I followed the trail a little further up and enjoyed the view

(and some mommy-time ;)

Some places the trail was pure ice...

Just enjoying the beauty of God's creation.

... and the last of christmas flowers.

(What is it with me that I can't throw away flowers before they really have died? ;)

The farmhouse table is our old IKEA Norden table with some planks on top.

I'm happy how it turned out, but not really sure with the color I used for the legs.

I just painted them once and I need to do one more coat...

(see the plastic sheet is still under ;)

The color is a light grey, though a little darker than the bench, but the slight pink/purple hue is bothering me.

My inspiration pic was some shades darker... shall I get new paint?

New Year and christmas recap

Happy new year!

The older the children get the more I appreciate holidays and school breaks... so good to have everybody home, even Mr Viking was home every day between christmas and new year!

Add the beloved aunt R to the mix (who spent her christmas break from her bible school year in England here with us) and everybody's happy!

Christmas eve we set up a long table in the kitchen/dining room and enjoyed traditional pinnekjøtt for dinner.

The table cloth wasn't ironed - but cloth napkins give the feeling of some luxary ;).

Mismatched wine glasses, my grandmothers silver cuttlery and my husbands grandmothers china.

Some straps of Hadanger lace and some burlap and a little greenery.

And my husband made the best mashed rutabaga (yellow turnip) I ever tasted!

fourth of advent

We finally lit the fourth candle (finally for the children - a little too quick for me).

December has been busy. Once more I spent a night at hospital, this time with my little girl who got a hard soccer ball kicked at her head, which resulted in a concussion.

We are thankful that she got over it quickly.

Than my husband lay new flooring in our entry - I'm SO thankful for this. The old stained carpet with it's strange blue color gone!!! :)

Anyhow it's soon christmas and yesterday I finally got the chance to get some greenery from my in-law's garden and made several wreaths and I added some greenery around the house...

... and finally the christmas feeling is here!

a day's worth of wood

The temperatures have dropped below the freezing point.

That means keeping the fire alive is high on my priority.

It's strange to have only one child home in the mornings.

But we enjoy these mornings tremendously, he and I.

And the more is going on in the afternoons with homework, music lessons, soccer practice and cooking dinner...

but in the evenings we lit some candles and gather in the living room while the wood stove still spreads its warmth.
